Harry C. Cooker and Sons is a family owned business that was created through the hard work and determination of a 14 year old farm hand. As a youngster, Harry Crooker dreamed of some day starting his own construction company. By age 19, Harry had saved enough money to buy a used 1929 Ford Model 'A' dump truck. By the time he purchased his third truck in 1934, he was on his way to establishing one of the most respected construction firms in Maine.
Over the next 40 years Harry continued to add to his fleet of equipment, taking on larger and more diverse projects. As the business grew, so did the number of employees. As soon as they were old enough to identify the business end of a spade, Harry's sons, Frank and Ted, also joined the family business.
The current family members involved in the business are Frank Crooker Sr., the company President, his brother Theodore is the Treasurer, and Frank Crooker Jr. holds the position of Paving Superintendant.
In 1999, the company had a core group of 169 employees which grew to nearly 200 at peak season. Total man hours worked for 1999 was 382,232. The average employee has been with the company for ten years. The most impressive statistics are that 54 employees have 10 to 19 years of service, 14 have 20 to 29 years of service and 5 have more than 30 years of service. These numbers reflect the fact that our employees are treated as family.
We are proud to have received the "Build Maine Award", presented by the Associated Contractors of Maine in 1996, as well as Bath - Brunswick Chamber of Commerce Business of The Year in 1997. In addition, we have received numerous awards for safety, including two from the United States Department of Labor's Mine Safety and Health Administration.
Examples of our community involvement include; the local YMCA's, Maine Maritime Museum, the Susan Curtis Foundation, Boy Scouts of America and the Coastal Cancer Treatment Center, to name just a few.
As we enter the new Millennium, Harry C. Crooker & Sons continues to grow and improve. We are an industry leader in Maine, and continuously seek to improve our methods, equipment and technologies. We are committed to maintaining a well trained work force, capable of safely and successfully completing even the most challenging of projects.
